HIV in Nigeria
Fahad Ahmed Chikaji executive director Arewa Youth Trust foundation, Kaduna State Gender ambassador yesterday Friday 17th August 2018 discussed on drug abuse, hygiene, rape and HIV on YOUR HEALTH 360 BED program on Invicta FM 98.9.
He discussed about the issues and cases of HIV in Nigeria, saying 8million girls of age 10-15 are HIV positive, 10million boys aged 10-15 are HIV positive.
He moved further to explain that in Kaduna State, Igabi local government has the highest number of people with HIV followed by Lere and Igabi respectively.
What we are bringing to the table is a new spirit of advocacy; serious advocacy, serious awareness and to ensure that the spread of HIV- yes we know that AIDS is deadly but people can live with it and survive and love their normal lives, if people accept that their situation and the reality of it.
Nigeria holds the unenviable position as the first most burden HIV/AIDS nation globally, in 2018 was the second in 2017 and 3rd in 2015 with little funding from government to address the situation and being the 7th most popular country in the world, that proves we need to do more in that area.
He further portrays that he is most worried about the status of Nigeria on the world map with regards to the prevalence of AIDS. It is quiet disturbing and not much is being done as regards addressing the situation. Something is being done but out of almost twenty five (25) million adolescents that are affected, we are treating only one million or a bit more and even the one million that we are treating is in reliance with foreign donors. It is not acceptable. I know that the president has inherited so many problems in every field but I know that he respects the sanctity of life. He knows very well that as a leaders, one of the greatest responsibilities that you can do for your citizens is to protect lives and property and ensure the health of the citizens because the health of the citizens translates into a very productive citizenry.
He also promised that Arewa Youth Trust Foundation in collaboration with other NGO,s like Devatop and agencies like UNFPA will work hard towards sensitization campaigns in respect to HIV and AIDS, Human Trafficking, Gender based Violence among other things.
