Mother Earth Project

OUR IMMEDIATE COMMUNITY Our immediate community is Zaria  (11° 3' N; 7° 42' E) located about 83km North of Kaduna, Kaduna state Nigeria along the Kaduna-Kano highway. By the existing pattern of settlement, Zaria urban is composed mainly of four districts namely; Zaria City, Tudun Wada, Sabon Gari and Samaru. Zaria is made up of a natural and stable ecosystem in the Northern Guinea Savannah zone, with a discontinuous layer of sparsely distributed short trees followed by relatively continuous layers of tall, medium and short grasses; rainfall is below 125mm. Zaria is an old commercial, administrative and academic town in Northern Nigeria, but most parts have poor environmental hygiene as evident by heaps of refuse dumps coupled with indiscriminate disposal. Zaria community is academic and traders ancient city with a population of over one million mostly of traders and farmers with academic institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria Aviation Collage of Technology, Federal Collage of Education and many more. Zaria is a seat of Zazzau emirate council with with Alh Dr. Shehu Idris as the Emir of Zazzau and many other district heads that head different smaller communities in Zaria. The settlement pattern in Zaria is clustered pattern with a few sparcely distributed houses. The occupation of the people of Zaria is predominantly tailoring, farming and trading. Social vices are the major problems in Zaria among the youths, mostly politicians are the ones using the youths as political thugs. Drug abuse, unemployment, poor environmental sanitation, begging and hawking are also the major challenges of Zaria community.   How we organised to create our parachute   We made it a collective responsibility to all members of Arewa Youth Trust Foundation. Members contributed towards the success of the project. A study survey was conducted in some of our communities and observations was made base on the social vices facing the communities, Arewa Youth Trust Foundation looked at those vices and in incumprased them in the parachute. While a we made a rough sketch, children were also given a roll of holding some of the brushes. The sketch was made by our professional members who are masters of art. But every member brought his or her idea and participated in painting process. The parachute comprises of many characters include human, animal, plants etc. The first which portrays the image of mother justice, a hawker, Almajiri Begging for food and a victim of human trafficking. They are all week ng for justice from the mother justice. On the other side of the parachute is a politician sponsoring violence and offering hard addictive drugs to the youths of his community. The political thuggery killed an opponent and set his house ablaze. His wife and his daughter are for their life. While a cow is running into the burning house out of confusion. Inclusion the moral lesson in this project is about tackling the issues arising in our communities that gives birth to global crises at large. So with project like mother art the significant curtailing this global phenomenon and installing peace is Paramount and commendable.
